「Michael In the Bathroom」(from "Be More Chill")を和訳してみた。

今回は、来年2019年2月にオンブロードウェイが決定している、オフブロードウェイミュージカル『Be More Chill』『ビー・モア・チル』(以降、BMC)から、この作品におけるiconicなナンバーである「Michael In the Bathroom」「マイケル・イン・ザ・バスルーム」を和訳してみました。

特にteensから絶大な支持を受けている、今アメリカで一番hotなミュージカルと言っても過言ではない作品です。

まだ日本では馴染みが薄いかと思うので、『Be More Chill』の概要を説明します。

 学校では影が薄くオタクの高校生の親友同士ジェレミーとマイケルの2人は、ある日、ナノテクノロジーが駆使されたSQUIPという日本から輸入された不思議なpillを手にする。

なんと、このSQUIPによりたちまち人気者になれるというのだ。

実際にSQUIPの指示通りに行動し振る舞うとその通りに。

しかし、SQUIPの重篤な副作用に気づいたマイケルは、ジェレミーに止めるよう注意するが、ジェレミーはマイケルが人気者になった自分に嫉妬していると思ってしまうのだった。

と大まかにはこんな感じです。

この「Michael In the Bathroom」は、SQUIPのことでジェレミーと言い争いをして、パーティーなのにトイレに一人でこもるマイケルの独唱曲です。

いくつも韻がふまれていて、一曲の中にストーリーがあり、感情の流れを感じられる名ナンバーとなっています。

地方公演からずっとマイケルを演じ続けているGeorge Salazarの、感情をむき出しにした熱唱が胸を打ちます。

私は彼が2011年にリバイバルされた『Godspell』で「Light Of the World 」を歌うところを観たことがあるんですが、このように感情を爆発させてソウルフルに、且つ繊細に歌うことができる素晴らしい俳優さんですね。

それを聞いて僕の気持ちは沈む、だって酔った女の子たちをからかうような奴は誰もいないんだと考えてしまうから
